St Thomas
Once home to the pirates of the Caribbean,
Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, and Bluebeard, St. Thomas with its
spectacular beaches, numerous scuba diving opportunities, fine dining
and duty-free shopping is a major tourist destination in the Caribbean.
The island was under the Danish control before it became part of the US
Virgin Islands in 1917. The Dutch influences are greatly reflected in
the lifestyle, cuisines and monuments.
Things to do and see in St Thomas
- Beaches:
The Island boasts of 44 stunning beaches. Fronting a spectacular
coastline, these beaches are haven for water activities such as
windsurfing, snorkelling and diving. Magens Bay, on the north coast, is
considered one of the world's best; see the splendid views and you'll
understand why.
- Shopping: Many visitors to this island believe
the booty of the pirates is on sale in the island's various duty-free
shops; it is little wonder that shopping seems to be the favourite
activity on this island. There is no sales tax and you can buy
everything from jewellery, liquor, china, to crystal and linens. The
local handicrafts such as carved calabash bowls, shell jewelery, West
Indian dolls and straw brooms are great for souvenirs.
- Cruising:
The Island is a major port of call for cruise ships so you can just hop
into one and sail out in to the aquamarine waters. Some of the cruise
ships are also fitted with underwater cameras to let you view the
colourful underwater marine life.
- Historic sights: Gain an
insight into the history of the island at Emancipation Gardens, which
is a memorial to freed slaves and the 17th-century Fort Christian which
houses the Virgin Islands Museum. Climb up the 99 Steps up to
Government Hill and take in the spectacular views of the surroundings.

- Room
With A View: This is a much favoured restaurant for a romantic outing.
Located at Bluebeard's Castle, the restaurant offers a fine dining
experience amidst spectacular views. You can choose from seafood,
chicken, pasta entrees and tempting desserts.
- East End Cafe: St Thomas's favourite restaurant serves traditional Italian fare as well as fresh seafood.
- Bumpa's: Situated near a waterfront, Bumpa's offers full breakfast, salads, and sandwiches.
Nightlife and entertainment in St Thomas
The
central hub of entertainment and nightlife in St Thomas is without
doubt Charlotte Amalie, along the waterfront. Here you'll find many
restaurants and bars to chill out. French Town near Charlotte Amalie,
also has some great pubs all within walking distance of each other. For
live music head to Havensight area. Paradise Point, offers live music
on Monday and Tuesday.
Golfing in St Thomas
Mahogany Run
Golf Course: Golf Digest proclaimed this golf course which opened in
1980, as an engineering marvel because this course had to be carved and
blasted into an area of land less than 110 acres. The course offers
beautiful ocean views and is open seven days a week.
